GENERAL PROFILE - COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT - NATURAL RESOURCES - GEOGRAPHY

GEOGRAPHY

The topographic element most typical of Colombia is the mountain range of the Andes, placed in the width=200central and western part of the country, and that spreads from north to south across almost all his length. The Andes are shaped by three principal parallel mountain ranges between yes: the Oriental mountain range, the Central mountain range and the Western mountain range.

On the coast of the Carib one finds a mountainous outlying mass known like the Saw Nevada of Holy Marten, where the highest point (the peak Simón Bolivar) reaches 5.775 m. Inside the Central mountain range the volcanic peaks of Huila are (5.750 m) and Tolima (5.215 m). Next to 240 km to the south of the Caribbean sea, the Central mountain range descends up to muddy zones and strongholds of humid tropical forest.

The peaks of the mountain range are permanently covered of snow; the level of the vegetation in these mountains spreads even 3.050 m of altitude. To the east of the Oriental mountain range there are vast extensions of low torrid grounds, scantly inhabited and only partially explored.

The southern portion of this region is covered by forests of thick vegetation and is drained by the river Caquetá and other tributaries of the Amazon. The north part of the region, which is the biggest, is formed by enormous plains known as The Oriental Plains and is crossed by the Goal and other tributaries of the river Orinoco.

Between the mountain ranges high plateaus are, mostly to more of 2438 m of altitude, and fertile vales drained by the principal rivers of the country. The river Fairy cake is the most important of Colombia, it flows towards the north between the Oriental and Central mountain ranges, crossing practically the whole country, and ends in the Caribbean sea next to the city of Barranquilla after a course of approximately 1.538 km.

The river Cauca also is an important fluvial and average course of communication; it has a length of 1350 Km and flows towards the north between the Central and Western mountain ranges and joins with the Fairy cake some 320 km before coming to the Caribbean sea. In the west, the river Patía runs across the Andes to end in the Pacific Ocean.
